An imbalance in Vata Dosha is caused due to:

  • Consumption of dry, cold or stale food
  • Irregular sleeping habits
  • Exposure to severe cold, and dry weather

Other than the above reason Osteoarthritis can also be caused due to old age, injury and obesity. Though no one can stop injury and old age, one can surely work towards controlling obesity. Osteoarthritis generally affects people of old age as their bones starts to weaken and cartilage starts to wear off but this disease is now spreading to people of young age. In people of young age the main reason behind spreading of this disease is obesity or overweight.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis:

A person suffering from osteoarthritis feels pain and stiffness in the joints of their body. Swelling and inflammation can also be felt. Osteoarthritis patient feels pain while carrying out regular work like walking, kneeling, climbing stairs, lifting heavy objects, etc. The reason behind pain is the damage caused to cartilage which is a protective layer between two bones in joints. Cartilage protects bones from rubbing each other and make their movement smoother. It also acts as a shock absorber in events of jumping, running, etc.

Ayurvedic treatment of Osteoarthritis includes change in diet, herbal medicine, yoga and panchakarma therapies.

Diet for Osteoarthritis

Food should be consumed at regular intervals so that body can digest it easily. Fresh cooked food should be taken. Meal should include vegetables and fruits that provide our body protens, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients required to stay away from diseases, makes our bones healthy and repair damaged cartilage.

Milk should be taken twice a day.

Hot soups of lentils, pulses should be taken.

Ghee and oils in moderate amount are necessary in daily diet.

Spicy, deep fried and very oily food should be strictly avoided.

Panchakarma therapies include Swedana where the patient is given steam bath that helps in detoxification and reducing the body pain. Abhayanga therapy involves oil massage with herbal oils like bala taila, mustard oil, mahanarayan taila, castor oil and herbs like Guggul that improves blood circulation and strengthening the tissues.
